Different Types of Onychomycosis
Onychomycosis is medically termed as toe nail fungus and it is usually quite difficult to determine the nature and type of nail fungus infecting any individual because of the location as the fungus thrives within the nail beds. However, there are mainly two types of onychomycosis as:
Distal Subungual Onychomycosis: it is the most common type of infection affecting the toenail. It is mainly caused by dermatophytes as the fungus usually feeds on keratin protein which is found in nails. It affects the nail bed by making the nails brittle which breaks easily. The nail loses its natural colors and becomes yellowish or greenish in color affecting the anterior part of the nail. It becomes thickened and in severe cases, gets completely removed.
White superficial Onychomycosis: It is not as common as the previous one but still is regarded as the major infection affecting the toe nail and fingers. The infection is caused due to dermatophytes affecting the surface of the toe nail and fingers. As the infection is limited to the superficial part of the nail, it is not so severe but should not be ignored. The nail becomes soft in texture and easily gets crumbled on applying force.
These were the major types of onychomycosis, briefly discussed. However there are other less common onychomycosis which includes proximal subungual onychomycosis and candidal onychomycosis. In Proximal Subungual onychomycosis, the nail fungus infection strikes through the proximal part of nail. It commonly affects fresh nail plates. Candidal onychomycosis infection is caused due to moist and damp conditions. The infection is caused due candida mold penetrating damaged nail which is often exposed to moisture and water.
